Oakland Historic Office Building

McGrath Properties completed an $8 million structural retrofit and historical renovation of this eight-story, 43,000 square foot former PG&E headquarters at 1625 Clay Street in Oakland.

Occupied by PG&E from 1922 to 1975, the building sat vacant until McGrath Properties acquired it in 1996. Registered as a national historical landmark, construction was completed under the guidance of the National Park Service.

In 2001, McGrath Properties was recognized by the Oakland Heritage Alliance with a Partners in Preservation Award. The award citation praised the renovation of the 1920s brick and terra cotta Renaissance Revival building — designed by Charles Dickey, the architect behind the Claremont Hotel and the Rotunda Building — and singled out the restored copper window sills and the hand-repainted glazed terra cotta at street level.
